A Hands-On Math Lab for Young Students

Built for parents who want their child to see, build, and explain the math — not just memorize the answer.

Early Foundations is the AlphaFlow program for Grades 1, 2, and 3. Sessions are 1:1, in-person, in a quiet room at our Lake Oswego learning lab, with real tactile materials on the table — snap cubes, ten-frames, number lines, and base-10 blocks. No apps. No screens. No timed fact races.

The first runway is Number Builders Lab — eight weekly 50-minute sessions that walk your child through the foundations of number sense: counting, partner pairs to ten, number-line work, place value, breaking numbers apart, and simple word problems.

Every family starts with a free Math Skills Assessment. We sit with your child for 45–50 minutes, watch how they count and reason about numbers, and write you a short summary afterward — in plain English, with no labels, no grades, no scores.

How AlphaFlow Works

A simple loop: assess, build a plan, teach visually, guide practice, adjust.

  1. 1

    Assess

We start every family with a free in-person Math Skills Assessment. We watch how your child counts, builds small numbers, and reasons about quantities.

  2. 2

    Build (concrete)

Children hold the math first. Cubes, ten-frames, and base-10 blocks come before written equations.

  3. 3

    Draw (visual)

They record what they built on a dry-erase board — the drawing is the bridge from holding to seeing.

  4. 4

    Explain (language)

They say what they did out loud. Number-sense words first; written equations come later.

  5. 5

    Connect (symbolic)

Written math comes last — after the build, draw, and explain steps are clear. Symbols have somewhere to land.

Why AlphaFlow Is Different

What sets the AlphaFlow learning lab apart from generic tutoring or online homework help.

  • Hands-on math with real materials on the table — snap cubes, ten-frames, number lines, base-10 blocks. No apps, no screens.
  • 1:1 with a tutor in a quiet room. 50 minutes per session, in-person at our Lake Oswego learning lab.
  • No timed fact races, no leaderboards, no reward charts. Confidence is the through-line.
  • Plain-English session summaries after every session. We describe what your child built, saw, and explained — never in mastery or deficit language.
  • Honest feedback after the assessment, even if we're not the right fit for your family right now.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Early Foundations?

Early Foundations is the AlphaFlow program for students in Grades 1, 2, and 3. We use real tactile materials — cubes, ten-frames, number lines, base-10 blocks — to help young students build a clear picture of what numbers are before they're asked to write equations.

What is Number Builders Lab?

Number Builders Lab is the first runway in Early Foundations. Eight weekly 50-minute sessions, 1:1, in-person, that walk your child through counting, partner pairs to ten, the number line, place value, breaking numbers apart, and simple word problems.

What does the free Math Skills Assessment look like?

A 45–50 minute in-person session at our Lake Oswego lab. We sit with your child, watch how they count, build small numbers, and reason about quantities. Afterward we write you a short, plain-English summary — strengths, where we'd start, and confidence patterns. No labels. No grades. No scores.

Will my child do homework?

No required homework. Each session may end with one optional 5-minute home practice idea — framed as "you could ask your child to…" — but nothing is graded and nothing is required.

Has Early Foundations been used with students before?

AlphaFlow Early Foundations is a new program. The curriculum is written and ready to use, but no student has gone through the full eight-lesson arc yet. We'll tell you so plainly when you ask.
